Heritage Interpreter

Summer Student Position(s)

 

The District of Vanderhoof is seeking enthusiastic and community-minded individuals for the position of Heritage Interpreter for the 2026 summer season.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer or designate, the Heritage Interpreter is responsible for delivering engaging tours of the Vanderhoof Museum and providing exceptional customer service to visitors at both the Museum and Visitor Centre. Heritage Interpreters contribute to the community by sharing knowledge, educating visitors, and fostering meaningful experiences that encourage exploration and celebration of Vanderhoof’s heritage.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge of the community’s history and attractions while gaining valuable experience working with diverse audiences.

DUTIES

  • Deliver educational and cultural tours to school groups, residents, and tourists that visit the museum grounds
  • Provide visitor information services and promote local tourism products, attractions, and events
  • Distribute promotional materials and encourage new and repeat visitation
  • Operate the gift shop, including stocking merchandise, processing sales, handling cash transactions and completing daily reconciliations
  • Assist in the installation of new exhibits and reorganization of museum displays
  • Support the planning and delivery of museum programming and District events
  • Perform light maintenance, cleaning and gardening duties on museum buildings and grounds
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

SKILLS                                        

  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with staff, community groups and the general public
  • Confident public speaking and presentation skills
  • Ability to use social media platforms creatively to engage visitors and promote tourism initiatives
  • Physical ability to perform light cleaning, gardening, and general maintenance tasks
  • Knowledge of Vanderhoof history, tourist attractions, and community amenities is considered an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in tourism, visitor services, retail, or customer service
  • Experience in public speaking, education, or heritage interpretation is considered an asset
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including rotating shifts and weekends
  • Must be a full-time student registered in the semesters immediately preceding and following employment  
  • A valid class 5 BC driver’s license, with a clean driver’s absent
  • Successful completion of a Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check (not required at time of application)

 

Due to grant and licensing requirements, all applicants must be between 16 and 30 years of age and currently enrolled in, and planning to return to post-secondary education. Please indicate that you meet these requirements at the time of application.

 

This is a 35 hour per week position, working rotating day, and weekend shifts, at a rate of $20.60 per hour, from approximately May 11 to August 31, 2026. This position(s) is temporary and subject to funding approval.
