LABOURER
(Casual On-Call)
Reporting to the Public Works Manager, the Labourer is responsible for performing duties associated with the District’s infrastructure. This position performs general labour duties in relation to the operation, maintenance, and construction of infrastructures such as roads, grounds, buildings, parks, cemetery, and water, storm and wastewater utilities.
As a member of a small team, the successful candidate will also possess a class 4 BC driver’s license that will allow for coverage, during employee absences, of the community transportation service.
DUTIES
- Carry out maintenance and construction of roads, grounds, buildings, parks, cemetery, and water, storm and wastewater utilities
- Performs handyman duties in various tasks and assignments, such as set-ups and take downs of equipment for events, moving and setting up furniture and equipment, and painting
- Assists in the maintenance, construction, and operation of various municipal projects
- Operates equipment specific to the task assigned
- Performs snow removal from sidewalks, and District buildings accesses
- Maintains supplies, hand tools equipment, and work sites to a level that keeps the workplace clean, safe, and in optimum running order
- Maintains daily safety records
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Ability to deal tactfully with the public, staff, and contractors in a courteous, professional, and effective manner
- Ability to read and understand detailed oral and written instructions
- Ability to follow direction and complete assigned tasks
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or a combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge and skill in the methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and operation of District infrastructure is considered an asset;
- First Aid and CPR-C training;
- Sufficient physical strength and stamina to do manual work in all weather conditions;
- Demonstrated communication skills;
- Knowledge of occupational Health and Safety standards;
- A minimum of a valid BC Class 5 BC driver’s license, with air brake endorsement is required;
- A valid Class 4 BC driver’s license or better is considered an asset;
- A clean driver’s abstract; and
- A clear police information search.
This is a casual unionized position with CUPE Local 1632, scheduled to work various hours at a rate of $31.69 per hour (2024 rate).
