Heritage Interpreter

Summer Student Position(s)

Reporting to the Tourism & Community Development Coordinator, the Heritage Interpreter is responsible for giving tours of the Vanderhoof Museum and providing front desk service at the Visitor Centre. Interpreters provide for the community by sharing, educating, and engaging with visitors in a way that encourages them to explore and celebrate Vanderhoof.  As a Heritage Interpreter, you can expect to develop knowledge about the community and its history and enjoy the opportunity to share this expertise with a wide range of audiences.

SKILLS                                        

  • Ability to work independently and exercise independence in judgement
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff, external groups and organizations including community groups and the general public
  • Ability to navigate and creatively engage travelers on popular social media platforms
  • Ability to perform light cleaning, gardening, and maintenance of museum grounds
  • Knowledge of Vanderhoof history, tourist attractions, and facilities

DUTIES

  • Deliver educational and cultural tours to school groups and tourists that visit the museum grounds
  • Distribute promotional materials; promote tourism products; encourage new and return visits
  • Stock and sell merchandise, handling cash transactions and reconciliation
  • Assist in setting up new museum displays and reorganizing building layouts
  • Assist in planning and organizing museum events; assist at other District events as required
  • Perform light maintenance, gardening, and cleaning in the museum buildings and grounds

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in tourism, information, or customer service
  • Experience in public speaking, education, or interpretation is an asset
  • Must be willing to work shift work and weekends
  • Must be a full-time student registered in the semesters immediately preceding and following employment  
  • A valid class 5 BC driver’s license
  • A clean driver’s absent
  • A clear police information and vulnerable sector check

 

Due to grant and licensing requirements, all applicants must be between 16 and 30 years of age and currently enrolled in, and planning to return to post-secondary education. Please indicate that you meet these requirements at the time of application.

 

This is a 35 hour per week position, working rotating day, and weekend shifts, at a rate of $20.60 per hour, from approximately May 12 to August 31, 2025.
